The University of Montana women’s soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Big Sky No. 5 Northern Arizona Friday in Flagstaff. Montana led the Lumberjacks from the ninth minute of play, with a goal scored by sophomore Frankie Brady, but gave up the tying goal with three minute to play, losing in overtime.
The Grizzlies fall to 3-12-1 overall with a Big Sky record of 1-3-1. The Lumberjacks climb to 8-7-1, and 3-2 in the Big Sky.
Brady’s ninth minute goal resulted from a redirected free-kick made by UM true freshman Lauren Costa, who would be credited with the assist. Brady now leads the Grizzlies both in goals scored and in points.
The Montana team was outshot 24-2 by the Lumberjacks. Senior goalkeeper Grace Harris made eight saves for the night in the Grizzly net. The Lumberjacks put 10 shots on goal for the evening, three of which would come in the seven minutes of overtime play.
Though the Lumberjacks put on a solid offensive show, the Grizzlies did not surrender the lead until the 87th minute, when Kristi Andreasson of Northern Arizona gave a leading pass to Lumberjack points leader, Jenna Samora, who would dribble past Harris for her sixth goal of the season and the tying point of the match.
In overtime, Lumberjack Sarah Neatherton would diminish Big Sky playoff hopes for the Grizzlies when she took advantage of a defensive turnover, dribbled past a Grizzly defender and scored in the upper left hand corner from 10 yards out.
The Grizzlies go on to play Big Sky last place team Northern Colorado Sunday in Greeley, Colorado at noon.
