The University of Montana women’s soccer team suffered a 7-0 loss to powerhouse University of Portland in front of 2,500-plus fans Friday at Clive Charles Soccer Complex. The Pilots, who scored a season-high seven goals, rise to 10-1-0, while the Grizzlies fall to 2-8-0 for the season. Portland forward Danielle Foxhoven would score a hat trick before being substituted out ten minutes into the second half.
Portland scored its first goal in the 29th minute of play. Foxhoven, on an assist from Keelin Winters, would deliver the ball past UM keeper Grace Harris’ reach and into the upper left corner of the goal from 18 yards out.
The second Pilot goal would be only two minutes later and result from a far, right-side shot from Kendra Chandhoke that found its way to the lower right corner of the net. The goal resulted from an assist by Charney Burk.
Portland goal number three was scored by Hally Kreminski. Taylor Brook would be credited for the assist on the 10 yard shot from the center, which would give Kreminski her first goal of the season.
Foxhoven would score her second goal, Portland’s fourth, in the 42nd minute of play. The sophomore from Littleton, Colo., would bury the ball directly into the middle of the net from 10 yards out. The assist would be given to Emma Nelson.
Following the half and in the 55th minute, Foxhaven scored her third and final goal on an assist by Elli Reed. Her hat trick would make for nine goals this season for Foxhaven, who would be retired for the night in the same minute.
Reed went on to score one for herself in the 84th minute on an assist from Sara Jackman.
Following her assist, Jackman would follow suit and score with a header off a Portland corner kick taken by Elinor Priest. The goal would be Jackman’s first of the season, and the final for the Pilots Friday night.
The Montana squad was fortunate to see the return of Abby Grafft, after an injury-related absence that has sidelined the senior for six matches this season. Graft has earned three honorable mentions for Big Sky All-conference selection in consecutive years.
In spite of strength offered by Grafft’s addition to the Grizzly defense, the Grizzlies would be outshot 21-3 by the Pilots, who would put over half (14) of their shots on goal. Junior Kaitlyn Heinsohn would get off two shots for Montana, with sophomore Lauren Christian shooting one of her own as she doubled her minutes played for the season.
Following the match, Montana coach Neil Sedgwick said, “With seven goals scored against us, it may be hard to see, but we had some great moments out there tonight. Compared even with great teams like BYU that we have met already, this team matched them all in athleticism, but excelled even more tactically on the field.
“It was an amazing experience to play such a quality team, and to share in the class that the Portland program puts fourth. From the moment we showed up to practice at the complex, we had an entire staff at our disposal, taking care of us. Every aspect of the experience was top class.”
Montana goes north to Seattle to do battle with the University of Washington Huskies Sunday. The Huskies (6-2-1) are coming off a 3-1 win Friday against Gonzaga. Kickoff will be at 11:30 a.m. PT. Live stats can be found at www.gohuskies.com.
