Former Montana soccer standout Sara Campbell, who is working with the Grizzlies in a student assistant coaching position in 2009, will be in Tampa, Fla., this weekend for the second annual W-League Combine.
The United Soccer Leagues (USL) accepted only 70 player applications for the tryout, which runs Thursday through Sunday at Tampa’s Ed Radice Sports Complex.
Campbell, a first team All-Big Sky Conference selection as a senior last fall, has summer experience playing for the Fort Collins Force of the W-League of the USL.
The W-League Combine gives top players in that league an opportunity to impress Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) coaches.
The 2008 W-League Combine was successful in moving 35 players who attended the combine into WPS drafts. The expansion of the WPS into Philadelphia (Independence) and Atlanta (Beat) for the 2010 season should likely result in an increased number of W-League alumnae in the WPS.
“All the coaches from every team will be there,” Campbell said prior to her trip to Florida. “We’ll have about three games to prove ourselves and hopefully show them something they might want on their team.
“I’ve been training hard for a few months now, so hopefully I can go down there and catch an eye or two. If not, it will have been a great experience.”
