University of Montana sophomore Teresa Huemann was named the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week the league office announced Monday. It was the first career POW award for Huemann, who was recognized for her performance at last weekend’s Minnesota Gold Classic in St. Paul, Minn.

Portland State goalkeeper Cris Lewis was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Huemann, a midfielder/forward from Johnsburg, Ill., scored her first two career goals in Montana’s 4-1 victory over North Dakota last Friday.

After freshman Lauren Costa had given the Grizzlies an early 1-0 lead, Huemann made it 2-0 in the 36th minute with what would turn out to be the game-winner. Applying pressure to the Fighting Sioux defenders, Huemann forced a turnover and went in on the UND keeper one v. one to score her first collegiate goal.

She made it 3-0 just 14 seconds into the second half when she redirected a crossing pass from redshirt freshman Erin Craig.

The two goals came on just three shots for Huemann. Her two goals gave her a share of the team lead with junior Kaitlyn Heinsohn.

Huemann did not register a shot in 53 minutes of action in Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Minnesota.

“Against North Dakota, Teresa was an example of a player that did all the little things that one needs to do to have success in this game,” UM coach Neil Sedgwick said. “Besides scoring a pair of goals, she should also be commended for playing a major defensive role in both of our games this weekend.”

Montana, which is 2-7-0, is off this week. The Grizzlies will return to action Friday, Oct. 2, at Portland, which is 8-1-0 and was ranked No. 2 nationally last week.
