Robert O. Lindsay Tennis Center

The University of Montana Campus Development Committee in the fall of 1996 approved the dedication of the tennis court facility to Dr. Robert O. Lindsay, former faculty representative for athletics.

Lindsay taught history at UM for 28 years, specializing in modern European history. He served as the history department chairman from 1975-78 and was the 1985 winner of UM’s Distinguished Teacher Award. He passed away in September of 1995.

Lindsay was the faculty representative to the NCAA for seven years. He had an important and visible role and earned respect and friendship from student athletes, coaches and the athletic staff through the years.

UM’s tennis facility, located south of the Adams Center near the University Center, includes nine courts. Montana’s tennis athletes have since built their character and skills on the courts.

UM head coach Kris Nord said the tennis program wanted to honor Dr. Lindsay’s staunch support of UM and community tennis programs. An accomplished tennis player himself, Lindsay was known as a true gentleman on and off the court.

“I hope our kids in the Grizzly tennis program will pursue their tennis with the same patience and integrity that Dr. Lindsay demonstrated,” Nord said.
