Senior guard Virgil Matthews has been named MontanaGrizzlies.com Student-Athlete of the Month for his stellar play in the Grizzlies' 2006 postseason run in March. Matthews averaged 13.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game in helping the Grizzlies make a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
In the semifinals of the Big Sky Men's Basketball Championships, the Grizzlies won a 73-71 overtime thriller over Eastern Washington. Matthews contributed 11 points, six rebounds and two steals to help UM advance to its second consecutive title game.
Matthews exploded In the championship against host team Northern Arizona. The 6-2 senior scored 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field, 4-of-4 from behind the 3-point arc. Matthews added six rebounds, three assists and a steal to lift UM to its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
After earning a No. 12 seed in the Minneapolis Regional, the Griz faced off against former Big Sky foe in No. 5 seed Nevada. In a game which Montana led start to finish, Matthews registered 20 points, five boards, three assists and a steal in the 87-79 win over the Wolf Pack.
Matthews closed out his career with a 69-56 second-round loss to No. 4 seed Boston College. Matthews was limited to only two points but did record six assists and three rebounds. |
