Senior Katie Edwards has been named MontanaGrizzlies.com Student-Athlete of the Month for her athletic achievements in January. Edwards averaged 15.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game for a Lady Griz team that went 4-2 in the opening month of 2006.

This marks the second time that Edwards earns the monthly recognition. She was previously named student-athlete of the month in December of 2005.

Edwards had nine points in the Lady Griz’ 68-65 overtime win on the road at Portland, their final non-conference game of the season.

In the league-opener at Montana State, Edwards tied for the team-high with 13 points in in 29 minutes of action to help lead UM to a 79-54 win.

Edwards was limited to eight points on 3-of-11 shooting from the field in Montana’s 65-60 home loss to Northern Arizona. However, two days later against Sacramento State she rebounded with a career-high 28 points on 7-of-8 3-point shooting and added a career-best nine rebounds to lead the Lady Griz to a 78-59 victory.

Edwards finished the month with strong numbers at Portland State and Eastern Washington. The senior from Lewistown, Mont., registered 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals in UM’s 81-59 blowout win over the Vikings. Edwards wracked up 20 points and four steals in a 58-56 loss to the Eagles.
