Juliann Keller has been named the MontanaGrizzlies.com Student-Athlete of the Month for her play during the month of January. The 5-10 senior guard from Turner, Mont., averaged 9.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game and helped the Lady Griz to a perfect 5-0 start in Big Sky Conference play.
Keller shot 50.0 percent from the field for the month, 57.1 percent from 3-point range and 85.7 percent from the free throw line, but it was the key plays she made in Montana's league-opening winning streak that have earned her this recognition.
Against Montana State in the Big Sky opener for both teams, Keller scored a career-high 23 points and made the plays that allowed the Lady Griz to rally for the victory. With the scored tied late in regulation play, the Bobcats' Scotta Morton appeared to have a clean look at a potential game-winning 3-point shot, but Keller partially blocked the shot, sending the game to overtime.
The game was tied again at 65-65 with under a minute remaining in overtime when Keller made the play of the game. Senior point guard Lynsey Monaco hit Keller on a backdoor cut and she scored a tough layup inside with 48 seconds to play and was fouled. The free throw put Montana up 68-65 and the Lady Griz would to on to win 70-68.
In its next game at Northern Arizona, which had yet to lose a home game, Montana had to rally for the second time in as many games to stay unbeaten. The Lady Griz trailed by 11, 53-42, with 5:38 to play, but Montana closed the game on a 19-4 run. Keller scored 10 of her 14 points during the decisive run, including a stretch of eight straight.
Keller recorded her third career double-double in the victory with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
In UM's 70-46 victory at Sacramento State, Keller teamed up with senior Hollie Tyler and junior Katie Edwards to score all of the Lady Griz' points in the opening minutes as they raced to a 29-6 lead less than eight minutes into the game.
Keller missed the Portland State game after suffering a broken nose the night before in practice, but was back in the starting lineup for Montana's 72-65 victory over Eastern Washington. The Lady Griz handed the Eagles their first league loss of the season and ended the month alone at the top of the Big Sky Conference standings.
