Junior forward Andrew Strait has been named MontanaGrizzlies.com Student-Athlete of the Month for his play on the Grizzly basketball team in December. Strait averaged 16.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest in helping Montana to a 5-4 record in the final month of 2006.
Strait, an all-conference selection from Yakima, Wash., opened the month with a 13-point, eight-rebound performance in UM's 62-58 non-league win over Boise State. He followed that up with a season-high 25 points and 10 rebounds in an 81-65 home loss to Western Kentucky. In the loss to the Hilltoppers, Strait matched the scoring output of WKU guard Courtney Lee who is pegged as a potential NBA Draft selection.
Strait finished with 17 points and five boards in UM's 72-65 home win over UC Riverside. In Montana's 87-47 blowout win over South Dakota State, he was limited to zero points in playing just 15 minutes with a sore leg. Strait was held scoreless for for the first time since his freshman year.
He had 24 points on 12-of-16 shooting in the Grizzlies' 92-63 win over Montana Tech, opening up a stretch of three consecutive games over 20 points. Strait had 21 points and eight boards in the road loss at Oral Roberts and 23 points to go with six rebounds in the loss at Portland.
Strait's 14 points and eight rebounds helped lead the Griz to their first road win on the season, an 80-74 win over Portland State. He closed the month with a 15-point, eight-rebound effort in the loss at Eastern Washington. Strait became the 22nd player in school history to eclipse the 1,000 point mark in the loss at EWU.
