The Grizzlies entered the 2006 Big Sky Men's Basketball Championships with the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. Montana registered a thrilling 73-71 overtime win over Eastern Washington in the semifinal round. UM continued its stellar play into the title game versus host team and top-seed Northern Arizona. Trailing only once and leading by as many as 18 points, the Grizzlies cruised to a 73-60 win over the Lumberjacks for their second consecutive league tournament title.

The momentum continued into the 2006 NCAA Tournament when the selection committee graced the Griz with a No. 12 seed. UM was paired up with former Big Sky foe Nevada, the No. 5 seed in the Minneapolis Regional. The Grizzlies' led start to finish in a convincing 87-79 win over the Wolf Pack. The win was Montana's first in the NCAAs since the 1975 season. Next up for UM was Boston College, a powerful No. 4 seed from the Atlantic Coast Conference. Despite trailing by only two at the half, Montana's historic run came to a close in a 69-56 second-round loss to the Eagles.
